What Are the Early Warning Signs of Transmission Trouble?

The sooner that you get transmission issues repaired, the more likely you’ll be to protect your car’s transmission from further damage. Here are some of the earliest warning signs of transmission trouble for you to watch out for, because North Texas Transmission wants you to be prepared.

Jerking, Hesitating, or Grinding

Any time that you’re feeling something different in how your transmission responds to your actions, that’s something to pay close attention to. Grinding happens when the gears just aren’t fitting together the way that they should. If you feel hesitation, what you’re experiencing is the transmission attempting to shift gears and then almost getting there until it finally does catch. These issues aren’t going to get better on their own. They gradually gets worse as the transmission damage gets worse. You might experience these issues more often or more severely as the problem worsens.

Weird Sounds

It’s not just about what you feel as you’re driving, though. There might be a whole lot of new sounds that you’re hearing. These can range from grinding sounds that can get pretty scary sounding to whining or humming sounds. As with the jerking and hesitation, the sounds are only going to get worse as the damage gets worse. You might start to hear louder sounds or you might hear new sounds every now and again that get added to the symphony of transmission issues.

Leaking Transmission Fluid

Spotting a transmission fluid leak is actually pretty easy to do. It’s the only fluid you’ll see under the back of your car besides maybe the occasional brake fluid leak. Just like brake fluid, it’s a greasy feeling, but it usually leans redder in color, even when it’s getting older. The color of the transmission fluid can tell you a lot about what’s going on. Black transmission fluid is on its last legs and pink fluid has been contaminated with water somehow. Neither is good news. Semi-transparent brownish fluid is fairly healthy, but you still don’t want to see any of it underneath your car. It’s a sign of other issues.
